Why is the Sand Red in Utah?

Utah is known for its incredible landscapes, including the unique sandstone formations in Bryce Canyon National Park and the rugged canyons in Zion National Park. One of our state’s most distinctive features is its red sand, like at Sand Mountain, just five minutes from Sand Hollow Resort. But why is the sand red? Some interesting geological features contribute to the bright appearance of the sand here in Utah. 

What Causes Red Sand? 

Minuscule particles of quartz and other minerals make up sand. In some areas, sand can be white, pink, and yellow. In our region, red sand particles are iron-rich and take on a red or orange hue. Depending on how iron combines with other elements, it can form a variety of colors, like the red we experience here in Southern Utah. The prevalent red, orange, and brown colors in Southern Utah result from oxygenation. The process is a reaction to water and air exposure, just as a nail rusts if left in the elements. While Utah is best known for its red sand, there are many other areas around the world you can find sand with a reddish hue—for example, Red Beach in Panjin, China. The sand in this region is colored by a plant called seepweed that grows in the soil there.

The Geology of Utah

Utah is known for its various geological marvels, such as mountains, canyons, plateaus, and extraordinary rock formations throughout the state. Our history of geological activity has included volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and the uplifting and folding of rocks, giving Utah its array of unique features. In particular, the southern portion of the state is mostly sedimentary rock, which is created by compacted sand. The rock formations are primarily known for their reds or pinks due to the iron oxide present in their minerals. Throughout centuries, the iron-rich soil in Utah has caused our rock formations to appear red as a reaction to environmental factors such as rain and wind.
