Chances are, you are visiting Utah for the incredible views and countless experiences this amazing place has in store. Utah is full of opportunities for unique photos of you and your family. There are so many photo-op locations here, whether you’re looking for a formal place for family photos or that off the side of the road, Instagram-worthy shot. Depending on the distance you’re willing to travel, you are in for a treat no matter what direction you decide.
Just Around the Corner
Sand Hollow Resort is home to one of the most photogenic golf courses ever. If you get the chance, check out hole 13 for one of the most incredible views you could imagine overlooking the sagebrush. The green grass and vibrant colors from the red rocks give it a picture-perfect spot for everything from wedding photos to a candid golf swing shot.
Sand Hollow Resort is located right next to Sand Hollow State Park. This state park features a picturesque lake view with the Southern Utah red rocks. On one side of the lake, cliffs of sandstone tower over the water. On the other side, the shore is covered in red sand, with the sand dunes being the backdrop. This spot is perfect at sunrise as it faces the East. Whether you choose the water view or a view of the dunes, you can’t go wrong with this location.
Down the Road
Just outside of Saint George, Utah, there is another state park worth a peek at. Snow Canyon State Park has multiple places that are very popular for photography. On one side of the park, enjoy the White Rock Amphitheater, featuring a bowl of white sandstone. At the bottom of the canyon are sand dunes and a hike called Jenny’s canyon, perfect for a pose on the side of the road. One of the most breathtaking views is from SR-18, called Snow Canyon Scenic Overlook. This spot has one of the perfect backdrops for family pictures.
When you think Southern Utah, you think red rocks and red sand, but past volcanic activity has also added lava beds to our desert scenery. In Ivins, Utah, there are multiple spots right off the road to snap a photo with the jagged black rocks and sagebrush for miles. The black offers an element of contrast to the red rock background. One of the most popular spots is just off Pioneer Parkway on your way to Snow Canyon.
The Virgin River Gorge is another popular spot here in Southern Utah. This winding road through mountains of untouched desert is the perfect place for a photo op. The gorge does not have a lot of areas to pull over for safety reasons, but the easiest way to access this spot is by taking exit 18, Cedar Pocket, for easy access. Take the opportunity to capture the desert landscape and the dramatic cliffs surrounding it. Joshua trees are visible throughout this location. This unique landscape is ideal for family pictures or portraits.
A Little Bit Further
Water Canyon, located in the quaint town of Hilldale, Utah, is about a 40-minute drive from Sand Hollow Resort headed East through Hurricane, UT, on SR-59. This hike features towering sandstone walls on every side, with a small stream headed down the hill. Snap a photo on one of the small ledges created by the water making its way through the canyon. If you make it to the end of this hike, a waterfall can be seen flowing down the rocks. If you’re not in a hurry, we highly recommend strolling to the end to experience that one-of-a-kind view.
Just 45 minutes from Sand Hollow State Park, you’ll find one of Utah’s fan favorites, Zion National Park. You have most likely seen a photo of this spot to persuade you to visit Utah in the first place. There are countless locations in Zion, from Angels Landing to Kolob Canyon. This spot is perfect for your Instagram shot showing off completing a hike, bridal photography, or senior portraits. Many photographers in the area are familiar with this location and can offer input on locations, poses, and what might suit you and your family.
