In a recent study published in BMJ Open Sport & Exercise Medicine, researchers from the University of Eastern Finland, the University of Edinburgh, and ETH Zurich revealed that a single round of golf can significantly enhance immediate cognitive function in older adults. The study, which involved 25 healthy older golfers aged 65 and above, explored the cognitive benefits of different aerobic activities, with golf emerging as a promising contender. At Sand Hollow Resort, we’re excited to share these findings, highlighting the advantages of playing a round of golf on our stunning 18-hole Championship golf course.

The Study

The research team conducted three distinct acute bouts of aerobic exercise, each involving 18-hole golf, 6 km of Nordic walking, and 6 km of regular walking. The activities were performed in real-life environments, allowing participants to maintain their typical pace, equivalent to brisk walking. Cognitive function was assessed using the Trail-Making Test (TMT) A and B, focusing on attention, processing speed, and executive functions. Blood samples were collected to measure brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and cathepsin B (CTSB) levels, both considered indicative of exercise-related brain benefits.

Results

The study unveiled that a single session of any of the three exercises – 18 holes of golf, 6 km of Nordic walking, or 6 km of regular walking – significantly improved lower cognitive functions measured by the TMT-A test in older adults. While no significant effects were observed on BDNF and CTSB levels, Nordic walking and regular walking were associated with enhanced executive functions measured by the TMT-B test. Your health is a great reason to book a tee time and play a round on one of our incredible courses, plus enjoy the Southern Utah scenery while you’re at it.

Practical Applications

Sand Hollow Resort takes pride in providing a picturesque setting for golf enthusiasts. The findings from this study underscore the cognitive benefits of age-appropriate aerobic exercises, such as golf, Nordic walking, and regular walking. These activities not only contribute to maintaining cognitive function but also show promise as potential strategies for those experiencing cognitive decline.

Julie Kettinen, the first author of the study and Doctoral Researcher in Sports and Exercise Medicine at the Institute of Biomedicine, University of Eastern Finland, emphasizes the value of incorporating such activities into the daily lives of older adults. The results highlight the significance of exercise intensity, duration, and type of influence on the extent of cognitive improvement.
